Donald Glover’s latest and last album release as artist Childish Gambino.
This album is a very eclectic mix of songs. I really enjoyed the fact that it’s a movie soundtrack, giving it a different necessity than albums usually have. Some of the songs such as Lithonia and Survive give a very theatrical vibe, while Happy Survival is completely instrumental. Personally, songs with a chiller vibe like No Excuses and Steps Beach really resonated with me and have been stuck in my mind constantly since listening to them. This might be due to the fact that I prefer that music in general, but even the songs from genres I don’t really listen to didn’t go unappreciated. Yoshinoya sticks out as a song that really wants to get across a message of no playing around. In particular, when the beat and flow change halfway through I love that it gives a feeling of directly calling out people Childish Gambino is frustrated with. I really liked the switch up of an indie rock punk vibe in Running Around and it felt quite light-hearted within its lyrics as you usually don’t hear lyrics such as ‘don’t need to fire at my opps’ within songs like this. The grungey bass guitar is a good spine for the song and it was very enjoyable.
I feel like you can pick any of the songs on this album and it stands on its own so well. Honestly, its so packed with different vibes and styles of production that its one of the most refreshing albums I’ve listened to.
